OBJECTIVE: Psychological stress has been implicated in the pathophysiology of both inflammatory and functional gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. The goal of this study was to address neuroendocrine modulation of cytokine production by peripheral blood cells in GI diseases.

Histopathologic data demonstrate low-grade mucosal inflammation in a subset of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This inflammatory infiltrate is mainly represented by increased numbers of T lymphocytes and mast cells lying in the lamina propria.

HOW WILL THE LEAP TEST STOP MY SYMPTOMS?

LEAP ELIMINATES YOUR IBS SYMPTOMS BY STOPPING THE INFLAMMATORY REACTIONS

WHAT DO EXPERTS SAY ABOUT INFLAMMATION AND IBS?

Research has revealed your IBS Symptoms are caused by a hard-to-see type of inflammation.

WHAT IS IBS AND WHAT IS IT NOT?

“WHAT THEY SAY IBS IS NOT. IS IT TRUE?”

I am pretty sure you have asked this question as often as I used to when I was ill. We all get no answers to what it IS but we get a lot of what it IS NOT. And in some cases what they say it is NOT is WHAT IT IS!

The Things We Are Told IBS Is Not:

  • Any Kind of Cancer
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease like Crohn’s Disease
  • Autoimmune Disease like Celiac Disease
  • Food Allergies
  • Chemical Sensitivity
  • Lactose Intolerance
  • Food Intolerance

DOES STRESS CAUSE IBS?

“Your IBS Symptoms are NOT caused by ‘too much stress’ or ‘psychological problems’.”

Eosinophilic enteritis-a diagnostic dilemma.

West Afr J Med. 2002 Jul-Sep;21(3):258-9.

Clegg-Lamptey JN, Tettey Y, Wiredu EK, Kwawukume EY.

Department of Surgery, University of Ghana Medical School, P.O. Box 4236, Accra.

Eosinophilic enteritis is a rare condition of unknown aetiology, although it is generally believed to be due to intestinal allergy. It may mimic peptic ulcer, subacute (or chronic) intestinal obstruction, gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. The diagnosis is often difficult to make and most cases are only diagnosed after laparotomy/ laparoscopy and biopsy. It can be successfully treated with corticosteroids.

Etiology of chronic diarrhea.

Indian J Pediatr. 1999 Sep-Oct;66(5):657-61.

Dr. Sami Ulus Children's Hospital, Ankara, Turkey.

With worldwide use of oral rehydration solutions, the treatment of acute diarrhea does not pose much of a problem. However, chronic diarrhea is still harmful, especially for the growth and development status of the children. Between January 1993 to December 1996, patients who suffered from chronic diarrhea for more than one month duration and admitted to Dr. Sami Ulus Children's Hospital were evaluated for epidemiological and etiologic factors.

The role of loperamide in gastrointestinal disorders.

Rev Gastroenterol Disord. 2008 Winter;8(1):15-20.

Hanauer SB.

Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Loperamide is an effective therapy for a variety of diarrheal syndromes, including acute, nonspecific (infectious) diarrhea; traveler's diarrhea; and chemotherapy-related and protease inhibitor associated diarrhea. Loperamide is effective for the "gut-directed" symptom of diarrhea in patients with painless diarrhea or diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

Treatment of diarrhea in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: concepts and cautions.

Rev Gastroenterol Disord. 2007;7 Suppl 3:S3-10.

Shah SB, Hanauer SB.

Diarrhea continues to be a prevalent symptom in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), requiring a wide differential diagnosis to define the pathophysiologic mechanisms in individual patients. It is essential that physicians properly evaluate complaints of diarrhea by assessing both patient symptoms and potential physiologic impacts on fluid and electrolyte status.
